Inspired by the ocean

Bob Bohannon - artist/carver

Thank you for your interest in Seashore Carvings. I’m Bob Bohannon, artist/carver.

We've all been going through a devastating time these last 10 months due to the pandemic. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who have lost loved ones, those struggling with the virus and their caregivers, everyone who has had their "normal" go upside-down. We're all hopeful the vaccines and health disciplines will begin turning this all rightside-up in the coming months.

As you know from checking my website during this time, all shows during 2020 were cancelled. Quite a jolt as one-by-one they first announced a "hold" than cancellation. And during this time we've lost family and friends to the virus.

I've been lining up custom orders for 2021, to begin asap while waiting for the shows to be given the go-ahead by local, state and federal agencies. I've been experimenting with several new concepts I believe you'll find creative and a next-step in my carving growth. I'll begin posting them in my Gallery here shortly, once my new website is online in the coming weeks.
For those visiting my website for the first time, here's the process I follow in bringing my carvings to life:

My business name is my inspiration: the life and energy in and around the ocean. I'm often asked about the steps I go through from start-to-finish. It's a multi-step process and time-intensive. I start by sketching the design in its size and proportions. I've found that anything I can sketch, I can carve. I then select the wood species - reclaiming whenever possible from the sawmills and lumberyards I purchase from - and in the preferred size. Since I like carving in 3-D, the depth of the wood can be from 2 inches to 8-10 inches. I use a few hand and power tools and a unique small circular chainsaw. I then apply up to 9 acrylic and 5 stain colors with my 'water-fusing' and 'torch-painting' techniques. These result in every piece having the appearance of double and triple the number of colors when seen from different angles - like the way sunlight splits into many colors when passing through a prism. I apply a special marine-grade finish that highlights each carving detail while providing maximum moisture and UV protection for outdoor or indoor display.

I'm available to carve custom orders so please feel free to let me know of a special custom piece you're interested in or one from my Gallery. I ship UPS insured all over the USA and would like to make a special piece for you, a loved one or a friend.

If there's a carving in my Gallery
you're interested in, or if you have a special request, email me at or text me at 757-416-4760

I'll be posting this year's shows as they are announced. Hopefully there will be several so we can enjoy the venues and fellowship once again.

Carving is a gift I've been blessed with and enjoy sharing - now more than ever. And I look forward to seeing you this year for the opporutnity to choose one of my carvings: making my art yours.
